We had a great second week in 1st grade! I want to thank all of my parents for their help and support. The students learned so much about the United States of America this week. Ask your child about the Statue of Liberty, the Bald Eagle, and Old Glory. We also studied short /a/ words and worked on addition.
Math facts fluency is an important skill to develop. A game I played with my son to increase his fluency used flash cards, a timer, and graphing paper. Every night we would set the timer for one minute and see how many math facts he could get correct in the minute. After he finished we would graph it (the graph helped him see his progress and if he was getting close to reaching his goals).
For the upcoming week we will be moving onto Science. We will begin by studying weather and the seasons. Short /i/ is the phonic sound for reading and subtraction for math.
