In order to push reading a little more I have set goals with the students. If your child meets their monthly goal they will be able to participate in the lunch the next Friday. They seem to be really excited about this.

This week we discussed how "pictures can tell a thousand words" (Carlos). Ask your students about how awesome it was to "read" wordless picture books. How it was very interesting to see the story told without words. Next week we will focus more on non-fiction and the cause and effect of different events in our history.

Context clues: The students will be using context clues to help them understand unknown words.

Next week is characterization. During this week we will take a close look at the characters in the story. We will not only look at the physical characteristics but also has the character acts in the story. Struggling with characterization? Check out this quick Youtube video. Characterization
While reading 20-30 minutes at home be sure to ask your child all about the main character.

This week we are digging deeper into the text we are reading. Ask your student what the difference is between a thick question and a thin question. When reading with your child this week ask them about the main idea or theme of the story.

This week we are discussing how to compare and contrast characters and texts. The Milestones will require the students to take two different texts and compre the two in an essay.

In the 3 days we have gone to school this week we have talked about the point of view. When reading with your child ask them what is the point of view of the narrator, or the different characters in the book. Ask them questions like why do you think character A feels differently from character B? Dig a little deeper into the text.

We are still reading Mr. Popper's Penguins. Ask them about the main idea, details, and important facts. After we finish you may want to watch the movie with them so that they can compare the movie to the book. Let me know how that goes. :)

We began talking about the difference between reading fiction vs non-fiction. They copied down an anchor chart in their notebook for things that they should be looking for when reading nonfiction text.

We are continuing to work on main idea and theme. We are reading The One and Only Ivan and looking for the common theme and main idea. While they are reading at home ask them questions about what the main idea is and what details they are finding to support their reasoning for coming up with the main idea.
Grammar: Pronouns: There is a great brainpop. Have them take the review quiz afterwards. If it's less than a 70 make them take it again. :)
Writing: Opinion Paper on what animal is better as a pet. A cat or dog?

This week we will start a difficult standard. The difference between theme and main idea. We will use the following anchor chart to help us understand what theme means.

Characterization: After looking at our data we are hiting characterization again. The students not only have to describe the main character but also give proof from the story. The character is ____________ because ________________.

Reading: Sequence of Events an order the story goes in. While they are reading their good fit books at home ask them questions about the sequence of events. They will watch a Brainpop video on Sequence of Events. If you would like them to watch it again log on with the userid: Spalding and passord tigers.

The kids are really doing a great job with AR. They are focused on trying to meet their goals and competing with each other to be the "Top Dog". They are working hard to include more details in their writing. A suggestion you can use at home to help me push them further is to have them write in a journal nightly.

We are studying character traits this week. When reading their good-fit books ask them about the main characters and what they are learning from them. We will do a few tasks finding character traits ourselves.
In Language Arts, we have begun writing a narrative essay.  I will attach a few wonderful anchor charts we have made this year.

Your child will be expected to write a 5 paragraph essay by the end of the year. We are taking it one step at a time. Currently we are working on the introduction and hooking the reader.
