Don't forget the Gingerbread Capers play Wednesday morning and our winter centers Wednesday afternoon. See you guys soon.

This week we have a lot to cover in order to be ready for the upcoming test. In Science we will be finishing our units on magnets. In math we are finishing unit 4. Please review tens and ones, greater than less than, and writing their own story problems. We will also be finishing up our non-fiction unit on penguins. There is so much information on the Internet on penguins so if your student would like to know more please allow them to research.

Also, they are really focused on www.ixl.com. Don't forget they can log on at home.

9/24

This week will be a fun and exciting week for us. We are learning all about shapes and Johnny Appleseed. I am asking your assistance in providing materials for our exciting activities we have planned.

The shape/candy sort will need these items: Hershey Kisses (cone), Lemon heads (spheres), Jolly Ranchers (rectangular prism), and gum (cube).

We will also need apples of all different kinds (red, green, yellow, ect.) so that we can complete a apple taste test.

Thanks so much for your help!

We had a great second week in 1st grade! I want to thank all of my parents for their help and support. The students learned so much about the United States of America this week. Ask your child about the Statue of Liberty, the Bald Eagle, and Old Glory. We also studied short /a/ words and worked on addition.

Math facts fluency is an important skill to develop. A game I played with my son to increase his fluency used flash cards, a timer, and graphing paper. Every night we would set the timer for one minute and see how many math facts he could get correct in the minute. After he finished we would graph it (the graph helped him see his progress and if he was getting close to reaching his goals).

For the upcoming week we will be moving onto Science. We will begin by studying weather and the seasons. Short /i/ is the phonic sound for reading and subtraction for math.
